Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a Christian-based legal organization that provides legal counsel to individuals and organizations in cases related to religious freedom and other civil liberties. Founded in 1994, ADF has provided legal counsel in cases involving religious symbols on public property, the rights of religious student groups to meet on public university campuses, and the rights of religious believers to express their beliefs in the public square. ADF also provides legal education and resources to churches and other organizations. ADF is headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, and has offices in California, Colorado, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington, D.C. It is classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and a Christian Right member. ADF has been criticized for its anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and for promoting dangerous and harmful conversion therapy. Alliance Defending Freedom has been involved in numerous high-profile legal cases, including the 2014 Supreme Court case Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., which upheld a company’s right to deny its employees contraceptive coverage based on religious beliefs. In 2018, ADF was designated a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which cited its anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and its promotion of dangerous and harmful conversion therapy. The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has accredited this organization. The organization does not disclose its donors, although a 2017 report from the Center for Media and Democracy suggested that ADF has received funding from foundations such as the Koch brothers’ Donors Trust and other dark money groups. ADF has been criticized for lacking transparency and involvement in several high-profile cases. It is also criticized for its extreme views on abortion, LGBTQ rights, and religious freedom.
