Raffaele Riva was born in Bologna on May 3rd, 1959. He was the first child of two healthy and educated parents, who made it their ultimate goal to give their children a good education and help them become successful. Riva’s father had an engineering degree as well as a doctorate in economics, while his mother had a doctorate in industrial chemistry.
Raffaele Riva grew up in poverty during the 1950s with his family. He was born an only child, which is unusual for Italy at that time, and never met his grandfather or grandmother- both of whom died before he came along. The family was very religious, and Riva was the first in his family line to have been baptized in the Catholic church. Although they were not wealthy, Riva describes himself and his immediate family as having had a happy childhood. They all enjoyed singing together; he and his father would hold each other’s hands and sing songs when the rain would fall.
His father worked for Agip, an Italian oil company; he began working there in 1946 at age 22. He worked hard, became a manager within five years, and eventually became an executive director later on.
