Richard Liu is a Chinese Internet entrepreneur and billionaire. He is the founder and CEO of JD.com, the second largest Chinese e-commerce company he founded in 1998. The company went public on May 17, 2014, and its wealth is estimated at $8.2 billion as of June 2016,
- Personal Life
Richard Liu was born in Anhui Province, China. He is the son of a bus driver. He attended Wuhan University, earning a bachelor’s degree in science and engineering. Liu married Zhang Zetian, a Wuhan University alumnus and a prominent celebrity blogger. They have one daughter.
- Career
Liu Qiangdong started his career as an engineer at HP Corporation before co-founding Beijing e-commerce company Joyo.com (then known as 360Buy). He then founded JD.com in 1998 with his ex-colleagues from Joyo.com, and the company began its operations on October 1999. Currently, the company has over ten million staff and over 300 million active customers, making it the fastest growing e-commerce business in China, with annual revenue of $20 billion as of 2015.

JD.com has overgrown despite the general slowing of China’s economy. As of October 2015, net revenue topped $5 billion in 2014 and $10 billion in 2015. It reported sales topping $50 billion for the first time in 2016 and is projected to reach $100 billion by 2020. The company keeps its customer data secret, so JD.com does not disclose how long customers have been buying from it or what purchases they make regularly. The number of users has increased from 5 million at the end of 2014 to 20 million as of July 2015, a growth rate of 750%.
- Philanthropy
In 2013, Richard Liu donated $2.4 million to support educational programs about AIDS in China and pledged to donate $3.6 million to help those suffering from the disease. He was also the chairman of the Suning Youth Football Management Committee in in 2014. He donated $3 million to help Chinese education as part of his philanthropic efforts on behalf of his home province, Anhui.
Richard is a successful businessman and entrepreneur. He made a good name for himself with JD.com becoming one of the biggest companies in China despite being only 42 years old.
